youth programs The Clay Art Guild Summer Apprenticeship ProgramEach summer, The Clay Art Guild chooses two local high school or college students for our summer apprenticeship program. The program is designed to encourage and improve skills in ceramic art and gallery procedures. Apprentices are chosen based on art teacher or guild member recommendations and demonstrated talent and dedication. Interested students should contact the Clay Art Guild for more information.
The program requires each apprentice to execute a ceramic project by the end of the summer. The project can be anything connected with ceramics - making vessels or sculpture, glaze testing, firing techniques, etc. Each apprentice is given a small studio space and all materials and firings for free. They are also encouraged to attend any or all of the visiting artists workshops for free. Apprentice duties include helping with: the firing and maintenance of the gas kiln; installing exhibits, artists' receptions and visiting artists' workshops; mailings and gallery maintenance. Each apprentice works two days a week from May - August and receives a stipend to help with college and/or other expenses.
Summer CeramicsThis four week summer program is a comprehensive ceramics program for young people ages 12-18. Students will work on the potter's wheel and on hand building, creating sculptural and vessel forms in clay. They will do glazing and two special firing techniques – Raku, a Japanese fast firing technique and high fired reduction in a large gas kiln. Additionally, students will be introduced to many types of ceramic art and learn the diverse ceramic processes used throughout history to create one of the most enduring art forms. The program is limited to 6-8 students. Download Summer Ceramics information sheet. This program is made possible by a generous donation from the Geri Bauer Foundation.
